12th-13th July: Day of the Thread trip

We've had a few questions coming in about this event, and rightfully so! Here's an overview of the "Day of the Thread" trip coming up soon.

12th-13th July: Day of the Thread trip

Up north, our friends at Questionable Research Labs are running a "Day of the Thread" - a two-day event on Tues 12th & Wed 13th July for the youth in and around Whangārei, and they need our help for volunteers! It's taking place at the University of Auckland's Te Tai Tokerau campus. If you are keen to volunteer some time to teach thread and fibre arts skills to the next generation of young makers and creators, read on:

Day of the Thread

In the Science and Design Lab we will be doing a deep dive into all things stringy and thready. From rope, knots and catapults to crochet, knitting and weaving. Candyfloss and noodles will add to the chaos. We will Learn, Make and most definitely Experiment.

Day 1 will be an introduction to each of the skills we be playing with. It’s about trying things out, learning new skills and at any opportunity geeking out about the science behind it all.

Day 2 is a making day. Let’s use our new skills to Create Something New. Who knows what that will be? Experimentation encouraged. It could be a disaster! Or it could be crazy cool. Both outcomes will definitely happen.

Bring happiness and your give it a go attitude. This event is for youth and teens with appreciation of disaster, success and weirdness.

Starting at 8:30 and ending at 5pm each day. Lunch will be provided and there will be plenty of fruit and water for snacking.

If you're keen to volunteer, we'll provide accommodation up north for the two days. We're also working on figuring out transport - this would mean the trip up the night before or the morning of (Monday night or Tuesday morning) and the way back on Wednesday evening.

Confirmed topics so far include:

  • Rope/Knots and building a tower and or catapult (scout pioneering style)
  • Crochet
  • Knitting
  • Microscope
  • Candy floss machine
  • Making Abstract Art with Strings: Plastic 3d printer waste (the stringy thread waste) reuse, paper, decorations, stitching
  • Music string instruments (maybe electric guitar pickup connected to stuff)
  • Weaving Flax
  • Felting

But they're keen to hear any other thread-related activities people might be keen to teach!
